Thank your interest in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. I am very proud of our exceptional faculty and resident staff and their accomplishments in our mission areas of patient care, research, education and community outreach.
Our educational programs continue to thrive with our fully accredited residency program with 5 residents per year, an ACGME-accredited fellowship program in maternal-fetal medicine, and an American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL)-accredited fellowship program in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Our excellence in education is also reflected in the large number of students (12 from the Class of 2022 and 11 from the Class of 2023) at Penn State College of Medicine who chose OB/GYN as a career.

With respect to our clinical activities, the Gynecologic Oncology Division operates out of the Penn State Cancer Institute at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and provides comprehensive cancer care. The division is a member of NRG Oncology (formerly The Gynecology Oncology Group [GOG]), and we welcome a rebirth of the division with new leadership and division members this year.
Maternal Fetal Medicine continues to serve as a resource for high-risk mothers from all of central Pennsylvania, providing consultative and ultrasound services at five clinical sites in the surrounding areas, including two in Camp Hill, and one each in Harrisburg, Reading and Hershey, with an inpatient service at Hershey. The division provides a full range of prenatal diagnostic options and is the gateway to our Complex Fetal Care Center at Hershey Medical Center that provides individualized care plans to mothers and infants with special needs.
Our Reproductive Endocrinology Division and associated In Vitro Fertilization Program and Andrology Laboratory is based at our Hope Drive clinic in Hershey. We have an additional satellite clinic and Andrology Laboratory at Penn State Health Leader Heights in York. The division continues to have superior results from their In-Vitro Fertilization Program (based on data reported to the CDC), which places them among the top programs in the region and in the country. We provide full scope non-invasive surgery to preserve and enhance fertility.
Our Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Division has expanded to include practice sites in Reading, Camp Hill and Lancaster, in addition to the main site at Hope Drive in Hershey and operates in multiple Penn State Health hospitals. We provide full urodynamic testing at our Hope Drive site.
Last but actually largest in terms of number of providers and support staff is the Academic Specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ASOG) division, which includes specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, subspecialists in complex family planning, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners. This division staffs our Labor and Delivery at Hershey Medical Center and performs close to 2,500 deliveries per year. Additionally, they provide full scope gynecologic surgery and outpatient care at three sites in the area: Hershey, Harrisburg and Camp Hill.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology's strengths in education include a well-established residency program of five residents per year (20 total) in good standing with the institution and the ACGME. The department has an engaged faculty and representation of every division in residency programs and oversight. In addition to the residency program, the department hosts two fellowship programs in maternal-fetal medicine and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, with a total of six fellows.
An important emphasis now is on longitudinal engagement with faculty members, to mentor their development over time. This will allow for reflection and introspection, along with potential specialization and focus on areas of special interest individualized to the faculty. Another strength of the department is the collegial and supportive working environment, providing new faculty with high potential to develop productive and rewarding academic careers in OB/GYN. These faculty will provide the foundation for a new and engaged faculty development program that will offer education opportunities for faculty learners across the spectrum of academic years and interest. In addition to providing core clerkship experience for students, the department is dedicated to mentoring medical students to a career in obstetrics and gynecology and is proud of the high proportion of students from Penn State College of Medicine who pursue a residency in OB/GYN.

Research in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Penn State Health is committed to the advancement of women’s health through research. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, provides a unique regional opportunity for women to access the latest clinical trials without having to travel to major metropolitan academic centers. The research team includes both nationally and internationally recognized investigators that not only participate in industry sponsored pharmaceutical studies, but have developed their own research protocols funded by institutional funds, nonprofits and the National Institutes of Health.
Research opportunities in the OB/GYN department include a broad range of illnesses ranging from gynecological cancers to endometriosis, family planning, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and infertility. The department boasts many protocols for women before, during and after pregnancy allowing it to remain at the forefront of treatment while helping to forge the trail of medical development.
Finally, a dedicated team of study support staff not only helps patients identify protocols that might be ideal for them, but will guides them through the research process ensuring that they know exactly what to expect and that they are never alone on their research journey. The department strives to make the process easy not only for patients but also for referring providers as well.

The OBGYN department provides complete care for women’s health. The team includes OB-GYNs, gynecologists, urogynecologists, maternal-fetal medicine doctors, genetic counselors, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, lactation specialists (IBCLCs), OB nurse navigators and clinical social workers.
