Gynecologic Oncology at Penn State College of Medicine

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers, including administration of chemotherapy, radiation therapy implants and gynecologic surgical oncology. The division's mission is to improve the lives of women with gynecologic cancers with equity, advocacy, engagement, education, research and collaboration.

Gynecologic Oncology Division Chief's Letter Basic Content

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care to women intended to prevent, diagnose and treat gynecologic cancers. The division has a long and rich history of commitment to research, education and patient care in gynecologic oncology. Historically, the division had one of the first fellowship programs in gynecologic oncology and one of the first members of the Gynecologic Oncology Group, now the NRG, a combination of the Gynecologic Oncology Group, the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project and Radiation Therapy Oncology Group. The NRG is a national multidisciplinary, multi-institutional organization funded by the National Cancer Institute to care for women with cancer. Residents, faculty and students have become internationally recognized leaders in gynecologic oncology. Two former faculty members, Stephen L. Curry, MD, and Rodrigue Mortel, MD, have been presidents of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology. Today, we look forward to the education and development of the next general of leaders in gynecologic oncology.

Gynecologic Oncology Education Feature box

Education

The division educates medical students, residents, fellows and advanced practice professionals in gynecologic oncology. Educational activities include participation in grand rounds, continuing education, as well as small group discussions and clinical bedside education. The division participates in educational simulation activities.

Research

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology’s primary research interests include clinical trials for women with gynecologic cancers including surgical treatment, chemotherapy, antibody drug conjugates, immunotherapy, investigator initiated clinical trials, regularly collaborates with medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, interventional and diagnostic radiology and pathology to provide multidisciplinary research to prevent, diagnose and treat gynecologic cancers. Additionally, the division does research into the innovative methods of educating current practitioners as well as the next generation of learners about cancers in women.

Clinical Care

The division provides clinical care in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers, including administration of chemotherapy, radiation therapy implants and gynecologic surgical oncology. Improving the lives of women with gynecologic cancers. Ambulatory patients are seen at Penn State Cancer Institute. The division coordinates care across the Penn State Health system.

Affiliations

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is integrated with Penn State Cancer Institute and regularly collaborates with medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, interventional and diagnostic radiology, and pathology to provide for the multidisciplinary care of women with cancer.
