Division of Academic Specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Education

The Division of Academic Specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology plays a significant role in the education of Penn State medical students and residents by providing comprehensive, evidence-based obstetric and gynecologic health education.

There is a core clinical rotation for clerkship medical students and electives in family planning and labor and delivery for fourth-year students.

Additionally, we are committed to the education and training of resident physicians in the office setting, labor and delivery and in the operating room, from PGY-1 through PGY-4.

This division consists of dedicated faculty who are committed to educational success, nurturing of collegial relationships within and across the various divisions, a positive teaching environment, strong didactics and surgical experiences.

Research

The Division of Academic Specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology has a multilayered research structure, primarily focused on clinical research. The scope of research is also expanding to include investigations into education, health services, quality improvement, and health care policy.

Research areas include adolescents with bleeding disorders and management strategies, vaccination during pregnancy, immediate postpartum contraception, Rh immunization in the first trimester, comprehensive reproductive health care access, and perinatal mental health. This division has been awarded several grants that support these research topics and there is an extensive body of published work.

Clinical Care

The Academic Specialists in Obstetrics and Gynecology Division consists of physicians, midwives and nurse practitioners. This division covers three outpatient practice sites (Hershey, Harrisburg and Camp Hill) and oversees the core of OB/GYN services: preventative care, gynecology services, obstetrical care, resident continuity clinics, inpatient obstetrics and gynecologic surgery. There are two current fellowship-trained Family Planning physicians who provide comprehensive care as well.
