The mission of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is to be patient and student advocates and to excel in education, patient safety and the alleviation of suffering from surgery and pain.

Anesthesiology Welcome and CTA

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine. The department has a proud tradition of growth, education, research and outstanding clinical care provision.

The Department of Anesthesiology was founded in 1970, and the name was extended to include Perioperative Medicine in 2016 to realize the progress that the specialty has already made and will continue to make in the future.

The department prides itself in the foremost delivery of clinical care in the broadening field of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, which also incorporates acute and chronic pain medicine as well as intensive care medicine in the many specialty units of Penn State Health.

The department's core contribution to postgraduate medical education is exemplary, with more than 70 resident physicians in the ACGME-accredited anesthesiology residency and fellowships in critical care medicine, chronic pain medicine, cardiovascular anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology.

Continuing medical education is at the cutting edge for all staff, as the department holds a number of nationally recognized events for simulation, regional anesthesia and perioperative echocardiography training.

Departmental research and scholarship is internationally recognized for its substantial contributions to basic, translational and clinical sciences.

Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Education

Education in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine provides training at all levels of practice.

Medical students can take part in a number of clerkships, electives and acting internships that help them build a strong foundation in clinical anesthesiology.

The four-year ACGME-accredited anesthesiology residency includes not only techniques for anesthetic administration, but also training in the judgment and skills needed to care for complex patients and interact with physicians and other health care providers to ensure excellent care of patients in and outside the operating room environment, with expanded exposure and experience in perioperative medicine.

For practitioners, a variety of anesthesiology, perioperative medicine and pain management continuing education programs are held throughout the year.
