Kevin M. Cockroft, MD, MSc, FAANS, FACS, FAHA, currently serves as chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Penn State College of Medicine. Dr. Cockroft also holds the academic rank of professor with joint appointments in neurosurgery, radiology and public health sciences. In addition, he serves as vice president for neurosurgical services at Penn State Health.

Previously, Dr. Cockroft served as co-director of the Penn State Health Stroke Center, chief of neurovascular surgery and director of the Department of Neurosurgery’s accredited Neuroendovascular Fellowship Training Program.

Dr. Cockroft received his undergraduate education at Johns Hopkins University and completed his medical degree at Cornell University in 1991. He did his residency training in neurological surgery at The NewYork-Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Cockroft completed fellowship training in neurovascular microsurgery at Stanford University and endovascular neurosurgery (interventional neuroradiology) at Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience. He also holds a master of science in public health sciences from Penn State University.

Dr. Cockroft’s clinical and research interests include brain aneurysms and subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as arteriovenous malformations of the central nervous system and occlusive cerebrovascular disease. He is or has been the principal investigator on several National Institutes of Health- and industry-sponsored clinical trials and an author or co-author on numerous scientific articles and book chapters. Dr. Cockroft is frequently invited to lecture on topics related to neurovascular surgery at various national and international meetings.

Dr. Cockroft was president of the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society from 2012 to 2014 and he currently serves as the society’s historian. He has been active nationally with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), previously serving as chair of both the Joint Cerebrovascular Section of the AANS/CNS and the AANS/CNS Joint Guidelines Committee. He is currently the vice chair of NeuroPoint Alliance, the clinical data collection and analysis arm of the AANS. In 2015, Dr. Cockroft joined the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery, one of the premier journals in neurosurgery, for a six-year term culminating in the role of editorial board co-chair. In 2016, he was named a director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He served as board treasurer from 2019 to 2021 and chair from 2021 to 2022. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Intrasocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) and is president of the IAC Carotid Stenting Division Board. In the spring of 2024, Dr. Cockroft will join the AANS Board of Directors as Northeast quadrant regional director.

Dr. Cockroft has had the honor of being named to the Consumers’ Research Council of America’s “Guide to America’s Top Physicians & Surgeons” and Best Doctors Incorporated’s “Best Doctors in America.”
