Research in Urology

Research

The department has a successful, outcomes-based, translational research program spanning several different subspecialty domains in urology. Current faculty have successfully procured extramural federal funding through the American Cancer Society, Department of Defense and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Industry sponsored trials and foundation awards complement the research portfolio. Ancillary research support staff within the department enhance the ability to successfully accrue and complete clinical trials.

A collaborative oncology program with the Department of Pathology and the Penn State Cancer Institute highlights the department's commitment to urologic cancer research. Additionally, the department is pursuing further formal collaborations that will draw on institutional strengths in cancer research, advanced imaging, pediatric reconstruction and multidisciplinary clinical trials. These specifically include collaborative programs in:

  • Genitourinary oncology cancer trials through the cooperative Big 10 network (collaboration with medical oncology and radiation oncology)

  • Kidney stone disease (multidisciplinary program including nephrology and nutrition and investigators at University Park)

  • Translational kidney and bladder oncology diagnostic and therapeutic program (with the Institute of Personalized Medicine and Penn State College of Engineering's Department of Bioengineering)

  • Image enhanced diagnosis and therapy of benign and malignant urologic diseases (multidisciplinary program with the Department of Radiology)
