Marketing Research Logos Feature Box

Consortium or Research Initiative Logos

At times a Penn State College of Medicine department, facility, program, etc., may participate in a consortium or initiative with other organizations or outside our organization. Often there’s a need to develop a unique identity in those cases. In cases where Penn State College of Medicine wishes to promote the work in which it’s involved, we recommend adding the appropriate Penn State College of Medicine logo to the materials. This will lend credibility to the message. Penn State College of Medicine Marketing and Communications does not design logos or marks on behalf of consortiums or initiatives in which a Penn State College of Medicine entity participates. Additionally, if the consortium or initiative originates here and/or we have a primary administrative role, then any logos developed by external vendors must be reviewed and approved by Penn State College of Medicine Marketing and Communications prior to use. Please submit a new project request form through Workfront for review.

Marketing Apparel and Giveaway Feature Box

Apparel and Giveaway Guidelines

Alternate Text A shirt, pen and water bottle with Penn State College of Medicine logo on them
The best logo to use on any giveaway item or apparel is the Penn State College of Medicine logo.

If you would like to include your department, program or event, please refer to the logo guidelines here for approved marks.

You may create and use a unique design (not a logo) or graphic element on t-shirts and specialty items (drink koozie, for example) for specific events that have a definitive start and end date (examples: 5K run, Match Day, White Coat, PA Program Orientation). This design/element may not infringe or violate copyright law nor be used in visual conjunction with one of our Penn State College of Medicine or Penn State University logos. There must be a clear visual separation and delineation between an official Penn State College of Medicine logo and the design/element itself. It cannot be grouped with the logo in any way as to appear as a larger, composite piece. A good rule is to place the design/element on the opposite side (front vs. back, left vs. right) of the garment. The design/element cannot be used on GENERAL work attire, such as scrubs, lab coats or other non-event-related unit uniforms. And it is not to be construed as an approved logo. It cannot be used anywhere else (such as in a PowerPoint presentation, brochure, etc.) other than on the approved item. Penn State Marketing and Communications must review and approve any design or graphic element.

Please submit a new project request form through Workfront for review.

Marketing Unique Logos Feature Box

Unique logos and graphic elements

Penn State College of Medicine mark with shield logo and logotype; regular and reversed versions shown.

Penn State College of Medicine needs to build on its reputation and visibility as a college of the University and so closely connected to Penn State Health. We are often confused with the health system. It is important to maintain a quick, easy, consistent recognition as a College of Medicine to continue to build our brand equity. For this reason, we do not allow individual logos to be created and used. It is important that we maintain brand synergy as a college of Penn State University. Therefore, please only use the Penn State College of Medicine logo as outlined below.

Please do use the Penn State College of Medicine logo:

  • On grant applications when seeking funding.
  • On apparel, giveaway items, printed materials, etc., representing your pride for the College of Medicine. See apparel and giveaway guidelines.
  • At national conferences when presenting on behalf of the College of Medicine. See branded templates for research poster templates, Zoom backgrounds and PowerPoint templates.

How to use the logo

The Penn State College of Medicine mark is based on the visual identity system of Penn State, as outlined below.

Tier 1 - Penn State

Tier 2 - College of Medicine

Tier 3/4 - Institutes, Departments, Centers, Programs

Tier 1 - Penn State

Penn State mark

This is our primary University mark. This tier 1 mark is the overarching entity to which all other entities are connected.

Tier 2 – College of Medicine

Penn State College of Medicine mark with shield logo

The College of Medicine has a tier 2 mark where the shield and logotype are proportioned and positioned in a specific way. This precise arrangement may not be altered when featuring the entire mark.

This mark is used to identify everything we communicate through our websites, print communications, presentations, social media profiles, signs and other visual media. Having a clear and consistent visual identity helps build greater recognition for and awareness of Penn State College of Medicine.

Never redraw or try to recreate the mark, including the shield or the logotype. Any modification of the mark diminishes its impact and weakens our legal protection. Only authorized artwork may be used.

Download the official College of Medicine marks here (Sharepoint; Penn State Access ID login required).

Color and the Mark

The official Penn State colors of our mark are Beaver Blue (PMS 287), Pugh Blue (PMS 284) and white. Colors look different in application, from match- to four-color process, from page to screen, and even coated to uncoated paper stocks. When trying to match our colors in other media, such as a thread for stitching or silk-screen, use the Pantone® coated color swatch to match.

For dark blue, use Pantone 287C, CMYK 100-76-0-18 or RGB 30-64-124. For light blue use Pantone 284C, CMYK 40-14-0-0 or RGB 150-190-230.

Minimum Clear Space and Minimum Size

Always make sure to maintain minimum clear space around the mark, as outlined below. Please keep all elements outside at least 1/2 the width of the shield all the way around the mark. When reducing the size of the mark, it must remain larger than .3 inch measured across the width of the shield.

Tier 3/4 – Institutes, Departments, Centers, Programs

For College of Medicine institutes, departments, centers and programs, your unit falls within the Brand Tier 3 or 4 levels and there is an approved set up you can use to be more specific. That means the name of your unit can be used along with the College of Medicine mark but should not be visually attached to it. Do not put your entity name right under the mark in a manner that would look like you are creating a new mark configuration. Please abide by the minimum clear space requirements shown above. Use a typeface within our brand style guide (Proxima Nova, Avenir or Franklin Gothic) and a Penn State brand color (Beaver Blue or Pugh Blue, shown above).

The name should be a separate element that does not compete with the College of Medicine mark, nor should it be so highly designed that it becomes its own logo. Vertical and horizontal configurations are shown below.
