Biography

The Rev. David Carnish, manager of clinical pastoral education (CPE) at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, previously supervised CPE programs at institutions in Tennessee and North Carolina for more than 12 years. He is a native of Milledgeville, Ga., and an ordained Baptist minister endorsed by The Alliance of Baptists.

He graduated from Valdosta State College with a BA in philosophy and a minor in sociology. He received his Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky. In 2020, he received an MA in interdisciplinary humanities from Penn State and is currently enrolled in a PhD program in art history at Temple University Tyler School of Art. He has worked as a chaplain since 1990, serving in nursing home, community, hospice, religious and Level I Trauma hospital contexts. He also served as interim pastor and associate minister with congregations.

Rev. Carnish is a board-certified chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains/BCCI and has training in critical incident stress debriefing with the International Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Foundation. He draws upon secular, radical, narrative and liberation theologies in his supervisory praxis along with constructivist educational approaches informed by Paulo Freire.
