James Broach, PhD

Dr. Broach joined the Penn State College of Medicine in 2012, where he is Distinguished Professor and former Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Penn State College of Medicine and Director of the Institute for Personalized Medicine. Dr. Broach graduated cum laude from Yale University in 1969 with a BS in Chemistry. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973 and conducted postdoctoral research in Medical Physics at UC Berkeley and in genetics at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories.

Dr. Broach joined the Department of Microbiology at State University of New York, Stony Brook in 1979 and then moved to Princeton University in 1984 where he was Professor of Molecular Biology until 2012. At Princeton, he served as Associate Director of the Lewis Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics and Co-Director of the Center for Computational Biology. Dr. Broach served as founding Chair of the Genomics, Computational Biology and Technology Study Section at NIH as well as chair of numerous special emphasis genomics panels. He was Co-Founder and Director of Research for Cadus Pharmaceuticals from 1992 to 2000, which he helped take public in 1996.

Dr. Broach is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Broach has published more than 250 articles in the area of molecular biology and genomics (H index = 74) and holds a number of patents in drug discovery technologies. He has been continuously funded by NIH throughout his scientific career.
