Clinical Pastoral Education (Level I)
The Clinical Pastoral Education (Level I) program at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center offers 11-week and a seven-month options for those involved in religious ministry or in seminary who are interested in pursuing training in clinical pastoral care.
Program Overview
Clinical Pastoral Education students encounter people in crisis and learn from examination of their pastoral experience under the guidance of a certified ACPE supervisor as well as from interaction with and feedback from CPE peers, staff chaplains, physicians, nurses and others.
Program Overview
It is recognized that each CPE student brings unique questions and motivations. Thus, learning goals for each student are negotiated with the supervisor. These goals are pursued in a variety of settings such as individual supervision and meeting with a peer group in interpersonal sessions.
Clinical pastoral education involves utilizing ecumenical and interfaith dialogue to discern the unique contribution of your own faith group to the understanding of pastoral care.

Summer Intern Unit (mid-May to early August)
Applications will be received in October.
The Summer Unit is a full-time program that usually runs 11 weeks (40 or more hours per week). Each student participates in the Pastoral Services on-call rotation.
Extended Intern Unit (mid-September through early May)
Applications will be received in January.
The Extended Unit is a part-time CPE program that extends seven months. CPE seminars are held on Monday mornings and clinical/praxis hours are negotiated with the student interns. Each student participates in the Department of Pastoral Services on-call rotation.
Applicants must submit a completed application along with a $10 deposit made payable to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The application form is available online through the ACPE.
The admission interview will be conducted by a clinical pastoral education supervisor or other qualified person. Acceptance decisions will be made after completion of the admission process.

Tuition for the program is $400 per unit. There is a non-refundable deposit due upon acceptance. This deposit will be deducted from the balance of the first unit. Payment is due by the first day of each unit.
The finance department will invoice trainees.
This program is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.
