Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle
The Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Fellowship at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is a one-year, ACGME-approved program that admits one fellow per year.

The one-year Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Fellowship at Penn State is designed to maximize the fellow’s operative experience and also provide fellows with valuable mentoring, quality research and education.
Clinical practice includes a wide breadth of cases, including collegiate athletic injuries, lower extremity trauma, total ankle replacement, flat-foot reconstruction, complex deformity correction and reconstruction and Charcot reconstruction. The fellow will gain valuable experience with multiplanar external fixation, multiple total ankle replacement systems and current cartilage-repair techniques.
The foot and ankle division is highly active in research, with several podium presentations at the national AOFAS meeting every year. Research opportunities exist at every level, from basic science studies involving rodent models for various processes such as tendon healing and Charcot, as well as clinical outcomes research. In addition, there are several biomechanics projects that occur in collaboration with Penn State’s Department of Engineering.
Requirements and responsibilities for the fellow include conducting foot and ankle journal club, providing lectures to the residents, presenting at grand rounds, attending required conferences and participating in research in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. The fellow will be expected to produce and complete at least two scholarly projects suitable for publication during the fellowship year.
The fellow is also exposed to a balanced educational experience with three foot and ankle attending physicians and has the option for additional participation in trauma and pediatric surgical cases if desired.

Applicants for the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Fellowship must be board-eligible in orthopaedic surgery and have completed an ACGME-accredited MD residency or ACGME-accredited osteopathic residency in orthopaedic surgery.

Resident Honors and Recognitions
The annual Resident/Fellow Research Day is held each year (with exception of during the COVID-19 pandemic) on and around the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus.
The intent of the event is to provide an opportunity for residents and fellows to showcase their research accomplishments to their peers in other clinical departments, as well as their colleagues in the basic sciences.
