Maternal-Fetal Medicine

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is a three-year, ACGME- and ABOG-accredited program that admits one fellow per year.

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship is part of Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, a tertiary-care center that serves as the maternal transport center for central Pennsylvania. Hershey Medical Center’s labor and delivery unit is state of the art. The ultrasound unit consists of top-of-the-line equipment and multiple sonographers with an annual volume of approximately 17,000 scans. The fellowship training occurs in outpatient offices, where the program director is located. Specialty rotations and electives are available.

Program Overview

In addition to the program’s clinical strength, resources for basic and clinical science research are significant. Fellowship faculty are funded in basic science, translational and clinical research. About a third of the fellowship time is devoted to development of research training endeavors. Fellows have a consistent educational and ultrasound curriculum dedicated to them and have the program director as mentor.

The fellowship training has complete dedication to the guidelines and recommendations of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). We are fully accredited. Educational curricula include fellow core didactic series lectures, clinical and research journal clubs, ultrasound lectures, research reviews, genetics series, epidemiology and biostatistics seminars and a perinatal multidisciplinary conference with the neonatal intensive care unit team. Perinatal genetic training includes amniocentesis, genetic counseling and non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. Epidemiology and research methodology are incorporated into the curriculum. Training involves a well-balanced combination of perinatal consultations, genetics, prenatal diagnosis/treatment, high-risk obstetrical care and ultrasonography. training is also part of the fellowship curriculum.

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fetal Imaging Suite, a full-service obstetrical ultrasound facility, has received accreditation from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, an association dedicated to promoting the safe and effective use of ultrasound. Accreditation means the practice has met nationally accepted standards and has demonstrated consistent excellence in patient care. Effectively and safely meeting the growing needs of patients is the division’s top priority and an asset to the fellowship teaching program.

The program has been fully accredited since its founding in 2009 by the current program director. It is both stable and actively growing. Fellows receive full support to present their research at national and international high-level meetings. This is encouraged and expected during the training of the fellows.

In our well-established fellowship training program, all fellows are given complimentary subscriptions and memberships to Stat Pearls courses for MFM Board preparations, and to the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. All fellows receive CME time and funds to pay for licenses, books, and meetings such as to attend the SMFM. Additionally, fellows are covered for special meetings that may include SMFM Fellows Retreats, Special Ultrasound training and research meetings. All fellows have completed their thesis research requirements during their fellowship training in a timely manner. Our MFM board pass rates have been at %100 in the last 3 years.

All graduates have gone onto their preferred locations and practices. They currently are in academic/academic-affiliated programs and community/private practices. Some include Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, University of Washington in Spokane, University of Toledo in Ohio, Community/Private practices in Washington DC and Upstate New York, University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, University of Massachusetts, Penn State University, Virginia Tech University and Medical College of Wisconsin.
