Pathway Overview
The Internal Medicine Residency American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Pathway at Penn State Health is a comprehensive, integrated clinical and research training track uniquely geared for candidates interested in pursuing an academic research career (clinical, translation or basic science research). The pathway involves 24 months of clinical training in our categorical internal medicine residency followed by 12-24 months of clinical training in a medicine subspeciality (i.e., fellowship training; time varies depending on specialty of choice) and 36 months of research training. During research training, 20% of time is devoted to clinical training to satisfy ACGME continuity of care requirements.
Pathway Details
The two years of clinical training in categorical internal medicine is structured similarly to that of the . The Penn State Health IM residency offers a 4+2+2 schedule model and a dedicated academic half-day for both inpatient and outpatient rotations.
At Penn State Health, we currently offer ABIM pathway training in multiple specialties including:
The subspecialty clinical training is overseen by the respective fellowship program directors at Penn State Health. The three years of research training is guided through dedicated mentor(s) who align with candidate’s research interest.
In addition to an established commitment to a subspecialty fellowship, most successful candidates had considerable research experience by having a dual MD/PhD degree, a DO/PhD degree, and/or a record of peer-reviewed publications. However, those with a commitment to academic research can also be considered.
A key to a successful candidate is aligning their research interest with the available research opportunities or mentorship available in the respective fellowship specialty. All of the divisions within the Department of Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine have active research and scholarly initiatives that span the research spectrum from sub-cellular studies and disease pathophysiology to translational, clinical, and patient-centered outcomes research.
We therefore strongly encourage applicants to review ongoing research activities on the for more information.
Application to the ABIM pathway is through ERAS. This pathway has its own NRMP match. Applicants who are selected to interview for the ABIM pathway are asked to provide additional details regarding their subspecialty of choice, research areas of interest, and a letter of recommendation (if not originally included in the ERAS application) from a research mentor/supervisor who could attest to applicant’s research experience and potential as a physician scientist.
Selected candidates are interviewed by the leadership of both the Internal Medicine residency and fellowship programs and any research faculty as determined by the clinical and research interests of the applicant.
Penn State Health is committed to advancing the science of medicine and we strongly encourage those candidates who are committed to academic research careers to consider the ABIM pathway for their residency training.
