Acute Care Surgery

The Acute Care Surgery Fellowship at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is a one-year, non-ACGME-accredited program that admits one fellow per year.

The Acute Care Surgery Fellowship is similar to the AAST recommendation for Acute Care Surgery fellowships. The successful candidate will have already completed the first year in an ACGME-approved surgical critical care fellowship. This fellowship is designed to train leaders in academic acute care surgery through an intensive clinical and educational experience.

Program Overview

Qualified applicants should meet the following prerequisites:

  • Completion of an ACGME-approved surgical critical care fellowship

  • Board eligibility or certification by the American Board of Surgery

  • Established ability as a teacher of medical students

A variety of clinical experiences are offered, including rotations with thoracic, vascular and hepatobiliary. There is an opportunity for an international rotation to facilitate the educational process with a diverse patient population.

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit is a 30-bed state-of-the-art complex providing critical care services for more than 1,800 patients annually. The patient population in the SICU includes a diverse mix of cardiothoracic, general, vascular, transplant, trauma and neurosurgical cases.
