Abdominal Imaging

The Abdominal Imaging Fellowship at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is a one-year, non-ACGME-accredited program that accepts one fellow per year.

The Abdominal Imaging Fellowship is designed to provide advanced training in all aspects of abdominal and pelvic imaging and image-guided biopsies and drainages. The clinical fellow will have an appointment as an instructor in radiology at Penn State College of Medicine.

The fellow will have excellent opportunities to experience collegial, multidisciplinary interactions through tumor boards and clinical interactions that require radiology participation, as well as research and teaching.

The Division of Abdominal Imaging in the Department of Radiology provides image interpretation to the numerous specialty clinical services at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. These include the surgical specialties of surgical oncology, urology, colorectal surgery, trauma surgery, transplant surgery and minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. The division also provides image interpretation to the numerous medical specialties, such as oncology, gastroenterology, hepatology, infectious diseases, nephrology and internal medicine.

Candidates must be board-certified or board-qualified in diagnostic radiology and must be eligible to obtain a Pennsylvania state medical license.

Curriculum Details

The Abdominal Imaging Fellowship is for one year, and is not ACGME-accredited.

Responsibilities

  • CT, MRI and ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis

  • Biopsy and drainage service – the workup, procedural and post-procedural care of the patient

  • Faculty and call responsibilities as per department guidelines

  • Six months CT/MR

  • Two months ultrasound

  • Three months biopsy and drainage service

  • One month elective/research

Fellows are expected to participate actively in a research project with the goal of preparing a scholarly work or publication.

  • Multiphase CT and MR exams

  • CT and MR enterography

  • Secretin-enhanced MRI

  • Dynamic pelvic floor MR imaging

  • CT colonoscopy

  • Rectal cancer staging

  • Prostate MRI

A variety of equipment is available to the fellow.

MRI

  • 1.5T and 3T Siemens at the main hospital

  • Two 1.5T Siemens at the East Health Campus facility

  • 3T Siemens at the Camp Hill facility

  • 3T Siemens at the research facility

CT

  • 128 dual-source Siemens Flash CT in the emergency department

  • 64 dual-source Siemens Definition CT at the hospital and 40 detector CT at the hospital

  • Dedicated 16 detector CT with CT fluoroscopy in the biopsy/drainage suite

  • 40 detector CT at the East Health Campus facility

  • Dedicated physicist and two assistants in a 3D imaging lab

Ultrasound

  • Two Siemens S2000, one Siemens Antares, two Acuson Sequoia, one Hitachi EUB-8500 at the main hospital

  • One Siemens S2000, one Siemens X300, one Siemens Antares at the East Health Campus facility

  • One Siemens S2000 at the Camp Hill facility
