Penn State CIRTL Teaching Certificate

Penn State graduate students and postdoctoral scholars can hone their teaching skills by completing the Penn State CIRTL Teaching Certificate program. CIRTL — the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning — is a 45-university consortium that helps graduate students and postdocs learn how to teach college courses more effectively. Penn State is a CIRTL member, which means all graduate students, postdocs, and faculty members can access CIRTL programming for free.

The goals of the GSaE program are two-fold:

  • to provide basic evidence-based teaching skills to all Penn State College of Medicine graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and fellows to prepare them for working with learners

  • to provide instruction for any graduate students and postdocs who are interested in teaching as a career goal

The program will consist of two mandatory sessions (three for PBL facilitators) as well as one of two additional workshops. All sessions are offered in the evenings and the same mandatory sessions are offered on multiple days to facilitate scheduling. Visit the website and scroll to 'Programs for Students and Residents-Fellows' to learn more.

Internship-Teaching Participation Process

All doctoral (PhD, DrPH) and MS students enrolled in the programs listed below are required to follow the Internship-Teaching Participation Process established by The Office of Graduate Education and Graduate Career Services at Penn State College of Medicine.

Applicable programs: Anatomy, Bioinformatics and Genomics, Biomedical Sciences, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health (DrPH), MD/PhD (during graduate years), and Neuroscience.

Doctoral students: In order to participate in an internship or teaching experience, doctoral students must be post-comprehensive or complete the experience during the summer. Any exceptions to this must be approved by the student’s program director and PI.

Graduate Assistantships: If you are on a graduate assistantship and accept a paid internship, your graduate assistantship stipend may be adjusted or waived for the semester in which you are completing the internship.

Graduate Fellowships: If you are on a graduate fellowship (T32, F31, etc.), please contact Graduate Education BEFORE accepting an internship offer. Many fellowships may limit the time permitted to complete an internship. Doctoral students should be aware of the guidelines and percentage of effort permitted by the terms of the fellowship.

Graduate students who have already secured and accepted an internship or teaching experience must submit the required Internship-Teaching Consent Form and attachments by the deadlines specified below.

Summer Experience: April 30 deadline

Fall Experience: June 30 deadline

Spring Experience: October 31 deadline

Internship/teaching experiences encompass all supplemental, learning opportunities including, but not limited to, internal and external internship, off-campus teaching, off-campus research, special project, and job shadowing/externship experiences.

Course Credit During the Summer:

If you are planning to complete an internship/teaching experience for course credit during the summer AND you are on a graduate assistantship, you will need to apply for STAP funding to cover the tuition. All STAP funding requests must be submitted by the established deadline.

International Students:

International students are required to work with ISSA (International Student & Scholar Advising) to obtain the appropriate authorization prior to starting all internship or teaching experiences.

Please read the information regarding F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Pre-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT). In general, CPT can be done before completion of coursework as long as full-time enrollment is maintained during fall or spring semesters (unless you do not require a full course load based on F-1 enrollment requirements) and as long as you receive credit for the internship. If you are beyond coursework and post-comprehensive exam, CPT is generally only available if the internship provides data for the thesis. If you are not eligible for CPT, you may have to use pre-completion OPT.
