Education in Cardiology

The Division of Cardiology’s educational mission is to educate and train cardiology fellows, internal medicine residents and medical students to become physician leaders in the future. We also are committed to training graduate students and paramedical students in nursing, pharmacology and other associated professional areas. Our largest commitment continues to be the training of cardiology fellows in our Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved programs in , and . We have plans to expand ACGME fellowships in Heart Failure/Cardiac Transplantation and Adult Congenital Heart Disease in the near future.

The division runs daily teaching conferences including Cardiology Grand Rounds, HVI Grand Rounds, and conferences in echocardiography, electrocardiography, interventional cardiology, mortality and morbidity, basic research, core curriculum and journal clubs. Training of internal medicine residents predominantly occurs on the cardiology acute and consultation services. In addition, the division takes regular rotations teaching at Medicine Grand Rounds, noon conferences and ECG conference. The Cardiology Division is actively involved in student teaching during all 4 years.

Research in Cardiology

The Division of Cardiology is active in basic cardiovascular research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, in addition to dozens of multi-center clinical trials sponsored by national agencies and medical industry partners.

Clinical Care in Cardiology

The Cardiology Division works within the framework of the and the Department of Medicine. Our division offers a comprehensive continuum of clinical services for patients with cardiac and vascular disorders. Our cardiac and vascular specialists are trained to handle all forms of cardiac and vascular illnesses and are equipped with the most leading-edge technology available. Consultative and diagnostic cardiac- and vascular-related services are available at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (HMC).

HMC offers extended services, including cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology procedures such as angioplasty and insertion of coronary stents, structural heart disease (including TAVR), cardiac electrophysiology including ablation procedures for patients with tachyarrhythmias, vascular interventional services, mechanical cardiac support and cardiac transplantation, and cardiac and vascular surgery. Arrhythmia monitoring services include long-term ECG event monitoring, implantable loop recorders, pacemaker monitoring and implantable defibrillator monitoring. We have the only accredited Adult Congenital Heart Disease and Cardiac Transplantation programs in central Pennsylvania.

Our cardiovascular services are built upon a comprehensive network of outpatient cardiac and vascular consultation service sites. Our cardiac and vascular specialists are available to see patients in a variety of geographically convenient sites throughout the central Pennsylvania region.
