The Neuroscience clerkship is a four-week rotation that provides a setting for medical students to learn clinical neuroscience. For students interested in Neurology or Neurosurgery as possible career choices, it is strongly recommended that the student do a subsequent Acting Internship (AI) rotation during the summer or early fall of their fourth year of medical school. Prerequisites: Successful completion of the pre-clinical curriculum of medical school, including clinically relevant neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropathology, and physical diagnosis. In addition, students must have completed all required courses/rotations for the third year of medical school. Length of course: Four weeks Date/time/location: The student may be assigned to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center or State College locations for all or part of the rotation. Description: The clerkship includes two weeks of core neurology on either the inpatient consult service, inpatient general service, inpatient stroke service or the neurocritical care unit, as well as two weeks of selectives that may include neurosurgery, pediatric neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and/or outpatient adult neurology. After completing the rotation, the student should be comfortable performing a neurological examination and evaluating patients with various neurological disorders. University Park
The Neurology clerkship is a rotation that should provide a setting for medical students to learn clinical neurology. For students that are interested in neurology as a possible career it is strongly recommended that the student do an acting internship (AI) rotation in the summer or early fall of the fourth year of medical school. The student will have the opportunity to rotate on the inpatient and consult services, acute stroke service, pediatric neurology service, as well as the outpatient clinics. Students may also choose to complete a week in neurosurgery or physical medicine and rehabilitation. Brief experiences in neuro-radiology, neuro-oncology, neuro-pathology and Pain Medicine are offered as well. After completion of the rotation, the student should be comfortable in performing a neurological examination as well as in evaluating patients with various neurological disorders.
