Training in the Postdoctoral Neuropsychology Fellowship takes place in several inpatient and outpatient settings. There is flexibility in constructing the rotation schedules. Time during each rotation also includes report writing and intake/feedback sessions. Didactics, supervision, and research time (20% of protected time each week) is provided. Fellows are required to attend a minimum of 3 hours of training activities per week to enhance their knowledge and professional development. Required training, in addition to clinical duties, includes biweekly neuropsychology didactic series covering advanced topics in neuropsychology, a monthly neuropsychology case conference and journal club, psychiatry grand rounds three times per month, quarterly fact finding presentations, and professional development meetings. Additional training opportunities such as grand rounds, journal clubs, didactics, and seminar series are offered through other departments. These include, but are not limited to, the following: Neurology seminar series Neurosurgery didactics Developmental pediatrics journal club Neuroscience seminar series Neurology grand rounds Pediatric grand rounds Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation grand rounds Additional clinic-specific didactics are provided Fellows are assigned a primary supervisor for each rotation who will provide at least 1 hour of face-to-face, scheduled supervision throughout the fellowship. In addition to weekly supervision, fellows will have supervision at multidisciplinary clinics from other providers and a monthly, 1-hour, individual supervision with the training director addressing professional issues and growth. In addition, they meet with the director of training as a group once per month. Fellows are allotted a full day devoted to the pursuit of scientific research. Early in their training, fellows will meet with neuropsychology faculty and/or faculty in other departments to establish their short- and long-term research goals. Numerous research opportunities are possible including involvement in an ongoing project, using retrospective data, publishing dissertation findings, and producing new projects. There are also opportunities to collect and organize outpatient clinical data, as well as collaborate with the Penn State Hershey Neuroscience Institute to conduct imaging (e.g., fMRI) and other (e.g., EEG) studies.

The Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Postdoctoral Neuropsychology Fellowship provides formal and rigorous training in lifespan neuropsychology using a scientist-practitioner model. The chief and overarching goal of the program is to train postdoctoral fellows who are specialty providers in clinical neuropsychology using a training model that meets Houston Conference guidelines and who are eligible for board certification through the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABCN), American Board of Neuropsychology (ABN) of the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology (ABPdN) following completion of fellowship.

Program Overview

The fellowship, within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, is structured as a two-year (24-month), 4000-hour clinical and research program with training focused across the lifespan. The fellows participate in at least four different 6-month clinical rotations (e.g., Early Childhood Development/NICU Clinic, Hematology/Oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, and Rehabilitation) taking place across different settings. Each fellow conducts at least one full neuropsychological evaluation or two shorter evaluations per week in an outpatient or inpatient setting with the presenting concern typically matching the current rotation theme.

Fellows are also integrated into different multidisciplinary outpatient clinics in order to expose them to a variety of presenting concerns affecting brain-behavior relationships. Throughout their training, fellows have at least 2 hours of face-to-face, individual, scheduled supervision per week, participate in several required didactics specific to clinical neuropsychology (e.g., case presentations, grand rounds, journal club, seminar series), as well as other didactic experiences through other departments. Consistent with the scientist-practitioner model of training, fellows are provided with dedicated and protected research time to develop their own research project and/or collaborate with other researchers at the institution. Opportunities also are available for supervision of interns and graduate students. Limited teaching opportunities are also available and encouraged.
