Limb Loss, Difference, and Preservation Rehabilitation Center for Research, Education, and Service

Center Overview

Mission: To create and sustain a team-based learning health system that integrates research, education, quality, and service for people born with limb difference, at risk of losing a limb, and living with limb loss (from causes such as wounds, infection, trauma, and cancer).

Vision: To enable the best possible outcomes for every person with limb care needs through regional, national, and international collaboration between people with lived experiences, clinicians, engineers, social scientists, and policymakers in the focus areas of research, education, and service + policy.

Center Objectives

Transdisciplinary Research

Catalyze transdisciplinary research across clinical science, rehabilitation engineering and systems science domains.

Interprofessional Education

Create educational mechanisms and serve as a resource center for interprofessional medical, engineering, and social science trainees as well as practicing professionals.

Service + Policy Translation

Create social impact through health systems development and collaboration with people with lived experiences, community organizations, and policymakers.

Center Structure

How the Center is Structured

Three advisory boards (members advise on focus areas) in Transdisciplinary Research, Interprofessional Education and Service+ Policy Translation.

Three cores (teams by project domains): Clinical Outcomes, Rehabilitation Engineering and Systems Science.

Operations team: Director, associate directors, administrator, coordinator, biostatistician, librarian/scientific writer and grants specialist.

Institutional Collaborations + Community Partnerships

As a growing center, we are expanding both our institutional collaborations and community partnerships.

Our institutional collaborators come from Penn State College of Medicine, Penn State Harrisburg, Lebanon Valley College and Penn State University Park, and Hanger Clinic.

Our community partnerships include the Penn State Health limb loss support group and the Amputee Coalition through the Penn State Health Rehabilitation Hospital Partnership Program.
