Supporting Global Health
Dr. Tom Lloyd is a long-standing champion of global health education, research, and policy at Penn State College of Medicine. A transformative year studying abroad shaped his lifelong commitment to cross-cultural learning and inspired him to create scholarship programs that support exceptional educational experiences for students. Recruited to Public Health Sciences by founding chair Dr. Mark Young, he helped establish an NIH-funded Clinical and Research Training Program and led the Medical Student Research Program for 26 years, strengthening research training and student success.
Through his generosity, the administers and supports several scholarships that provide financial assistance for global health study, research, and service-based experiences.

Available Scholarships
The Mark Young International Health Policy Scholarship provides recognition and financial support to individuals pursuing international health policy experiences. The award supports study, training, or project-based work outside the United States that advances understanding of health systems, policy development, and global health governance.
Eligibility
Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health faculty, fellows, residents, medical students, and graduate students.
Availability
Application opens March 1 and closes April 1.
Application Process
The application is distributed by email to the Penn State College of Medicine community when the cycle opens. Eligible applicants will receive application instructions directly.
The Lloyd Scholarship for Research by Penn State Medical Students supports medical students at Penn State College of Medicine who are engaged in global health-related research. The scholarship is intended to offset costs associated with conducting meaningful research projects, including internationally based or globally focused studies that contribute to improved health outcomes, health equity, and evidence-based practice.
Eligibility
Medical students enrolled at Penn State College of Medicine engaged in research experiences that emphasize firsthand exposure, learning, and knowledge sharing. Applicants must submit a goal-directed proposal following the See–Learn–Share framework.

The Spirit of Life Foundation Award supports global health experiences that emphasize service, education, and community engagement. The award aligns with the mission of the Spirit of Life Foundation to improve quality of life through health-focused initiatives, particularly those serving underserved or resource-limited populations.
Eligibility
Limited to students participating in the Global Health Scholars Program at Penn State College of Medicine.

The application closed March 1.
