Real Science, Real Food, Real Life
On This Page
The Penn State Food As Medicine Initiative believes that everyone has a right to healthy, high-quality, culturally appropriate food. Our goal is to realize a future where everyone can identify, access, prepare and eat high-quality, culturally appropriate food to achieve optimal health. The Food As Medicine Initiative network uses evidence-based behavioral intervention strategies to help individuals, families and communities live healthier lives with food. We bring together interdisciplinary groups who strive to be a driving force in promoting health by transforming practice and policy in our communities, healthcare practices and educational programs.

Food As Medicine
We want to make the healthy choise the easy choice. We use cutting-edge science to develop Food As Medicine programs in community and clinical settings. This includes working with community partners to identify real-world challenges to healthy eating and designing practical solutions that will work in their homes and neighborhoods.

Vison
The overarching goal of our work is to realize a future where everyone can identify, access, prepare, and eat high quality, culturally appropriate food to achieve optimal health.
Identify: By providing health education, we equip individuals with tools to make healthy decisions about their diet and health.
Access: We aim to improve access to healthy food in homes and communities through programs such as medically tailored food boxes, coupons for fruit and vegetables, and by dismantling barriers that prevent people from obtaining healthy options.
Prepare: Cooking education programs provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to plan, purchase, and cook healthy foods.
Eat: As a culmination of our identify, access and prepare initiatives, we support individuals and communities to eat healthy foods and achieve optimal health.
