Dr. Fumiaki Imamura and his laboratory focus on understanding how neural circuits are established during development and how disruption of these processes contributes to neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders.

The laboratory uses the olfactory system as a model to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal development, differentiation, and circuit formation. A major research focus is understanding how distinct types of neurons in the olfactory bulb are generated during development and how their unique molecular and anatomical properties contribute to olfactory information processing. The laboratory also investigates how prenatal environmental exposures disrupt neural development and lead to alterations in neural circuitry and behavior. In addition, research in the laboratory examines how exposure to environmental toxicants affects the adult olfactory system and contributes to olfactory dysfunction, as well as the potential links between olfactory dysfunction and neurological disorders.
