Student Research Opportunities

After Acceptance

After you are notified of acceptance, you will need to complete and return the Undergraduate Internship Application.

Student Research Funding

The Department of Orthopaedics and Therapy Services is committed to supporting medical students engaged in scholarly activities within the department. Students may apply for a stipend to help offset registration and travel expenses associated with presenting a poster or podium presentation at a professional conference.

Funding is subject to departmental budget availability and other funding resources. Approval of funding is not guaranteed and will be determined through the department's review and approval process.

Additional Information

Purpose

The Department of Orthopaedics and Therapy Services may provide funding support to medical students presenting research at orthopaedic-focused professional meetings. Funding is intended to assist with travel and meeting-related expenses associated with poster or podium presentations conducted in collaboration with department faculty.

Eligibility

  1. Maximum of two (2) research projects per student per fiscal year.

  2. One (1) meeting per research project.

  3. Funding is subject to departmental budget availability and is not guaranteed.

Application Process

Step 1: Faculty Approval

Obtain approval from the orthopaedic faculty member associated with the project. Approval to use departmental funds must be documented via email.

Step 2: Funding Request

Submit the following at least 45 days prior to the meeting:

  1. Completed online funding application

  2. Completed Non-Employee Form (download Non-Employee Form from Penn State)

  3. Copy of meeting brochure or conference information

  4. Brief project summary

  5. Documentation of abstract acceptance, if available

Final departmental approval must be received before making travel arrangements or incurring expenses.

Funding Amount

Approved applicants may receive a stipend of up to $750 per project to offset travel-related expenses.

Reimbursement Requirements

Students must submit itemized receipts showing the student name, expense details, and proof of payment. All reimbursement requests must be submitted within two (2) weeks of the conclusion of travel.
