Faculty Handbook

Introduction

This Faculty Guide is intended to provide a concise look at University practices affecting the solicitation of grant and contract funds. It is not intended to be an official statement of the University or comprehensive manual, but a brief guide to aid Penn State faculty in understanding and pursuing research support.

Support can take many forms. There are government agencies, private industries and private foundations that, as part of their mission, support research in a wide variety of areas. Most government agencies and private foundations award grants, while private industries award grants, contracts and agreements. A grant typically allows the Investigator the widest flexibility in the performance of the research and requires a minimum of reporting responsibility. Contractual agreements may be more narrowly defined and restrictive in the performance of the research and the reporting structure. Many government agencies and foundations provide detailed guideline packages and information concerning the grant application process. Industry sources may be more nebulous in their application process.

The Office of Research Development can assist faculty in obtaining funding source information and guideline packages. Research Affairs can assist in proposal preparation and submission. All applications for external funding must be processed through The Office of Research Affairs.
