Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was founded in 1963 with a generous $50 million gift from The Milton S. Hershey Foundation. In the same spirit of giving, indebtedness, and appreciation, Penn State Hershey is committed to engaging with the local, regional, national, and global communities in which we live. It is one of the ways we can say "thank you" for supporting us and trusting us with your health.

Community Service Missions

  1. Outreach: Improve the quality of life for those in our local, regional, national, and global communities through service and volunteerism.
  2. Education: Provide cutting edge information to the community about health and medical issues. We strive to promote safety, healthy habits, general well-being, and preventive medicine in conjunction with our community partners.
  3. Partnership: Join with members of our local community to make central Pennsylvania a healthier and better place to live.

As teachers, care-givers, and researchers, service defines us. It is more than a commitment we make to our community - it is part of our nature.

Our community service activities take many forms and involve thousands of Penn State Hershey employees, Central Pennsylvania citizens, and partners across the globe. We provide tens of millions of dollars annually in charity work and state-of-the-art compassionate care to individuals without insurance or on Medicaid.

2012 Community Health Needs Assessment Report

Healthcare providers in Central Pennsylvania are committed to understanding, anticipating, assessing, and addressing the healthcare needs of their communities. In the fall of 2011, Holy Spirit Health System, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and PinnacleHealth System, formed a collaborative workgroup to identify the needs of those living within Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, Lebanon, and the northern tier of York Counties. With mutual interest in the health and well-being of residents in the region served by the three sponsors, a collaborative community health needs assessment was conducted to evaluate and understand the region's health needs. This study, conducted by Tripp Umbach, a nationally recognized leader in community health assessments, identifies specific community health needs and evaluates how those needs are being met in order to better connect health and human services with the needs of residents in the multi-county region.

Children's Hospital

Caring for Families

Every year, Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is a destination for hope and healing for thousands of children and their families. As the only Level I pediatric trauma center between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, we serve one of the most populous rural regions in the nation, with more than a million children in our referral area.

The new 263,000-square-foot, five-story facility funded in part by private donors and state development dollars is nearing completion. The nearly $207 million facility is being built adjacent to the Medical Center’s main entrance. The design is child-friendly with a look and feel appropriate for young patients and their families.

Four Diamonds Fund

The mission of The Four Diamonds Fund is to conquer childhood cancer by assisting children treated at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital and their families through superior care, comprehensive support, and innovative research.

Any family with a child being treated for pediatric cancer at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital in Hershey is automatically eligible for support.

The Fund has helped more than 2,000 families since 1972. Approximately 90 new families receive support each year.

CMN

Children's Miracle Network is an international non-profit organization that has affiliations with 170 children’s hospitals. Children’s Miracle Network at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital serves the Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York region.

Children's Miracle Network's mission is to raise funds for children’s services and create community awareness of children’s issues. All money raised by CMN goes directly toward patient services, research, equipment, program services and educational resources at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital.
